“In the relationship between Earth and humanity, not only a human can be an aggressor. Nature pays us back from time to time. I mean not only cataclysms but seasonal allergy. So some unusual design rethinking of richweed as the one of the main allergens which is widely spread in Ukraine could fit the general idea quite well.”

“I want to emphasize three crucial aspects of our topic: 1. It is an official fact that humanity has entered Anthropocene epoch when human activities are dominating. It means our activities have an irrecoverable impact on Earth and all its natural systems. Forest clearance, water pollution, harmful emissions into the atmosphere have reached the point when there is no way back. Probably a designer cannot reverse this situation, but their goal in this epoch is to stop harming Earth. And thus we should rethink the main design approach and its goal: “what do I want to achieve with my design” 2. We called our project “Affair with Earth”. Earth means here some personalized substance. It is a kind of a friend, like a totally separate creature. American activists Beth Stephens and Annie Sprinkle explained it well in their “Ecosex manifesto”. They offer to rethink a common idea of “Mother Earth” and turn it into “Lover Earth”. As Mother, she is always kind and all-forgiving. Mother loves her kids even when they are brutal to her. In contrast, a friend or a lover implies a quite different attitude. They need respect and mutuality. 3. All the time over the span of history Homo Sapience understood thyself as a superior among other creatures. In old times religion taught us soul is only a human’s privilege and church did ots best to separate men from nature. In Newton times and later into industrial development humans were making a lot of experiments on animals and nature, they were doing everything they felt pleased to do. We should rethink this interaction. A human being is not dominant in this system anymore. And if it is so how can design in this new epoch still remain human-centered? It relates to Ukraine through our mythology, traditional crafts, rituals and reach heritage of pagan traditions. For instance, we still have Kupala night, a fest which roots back into pre-Christian times.”
COMPETITIVE SELECTION OF WORKS:

Ukraine: Affair with Earth
The exhibition shows how Ukrainian artists and designers coexist with the Earth, perceiving it as Mother, Kolkhan, a source of inspiration, an advisor and accomplice to a crime. The project “Ukraine: Affair with Earth” tries to rethink the content of Ukrainian crafts and shift the focus from the final product to a process that is based on critical thinking. The choice of materials, local production, environmental friendliness and relationships with the “mythical” being become the main reference points.
The rich Ukrainian mythology and traditional pagan rituals, based on the equal co-existence between man and nature, begin a new discussion about the place of man on the planet Earth. An example is observations and reflections on the phenomena of Chernobyl, where flora and fauna are an indicator of how the presence and, at the same time, the absence of a person’s influence on the environment affects. By the way, some species of animals that were considered to have disappeared again began to appear on Ukrainian soil: Przheval’skii horses re-traveling in the exclusion zone.
The project “Ukraine: Affair with Earth” raises the question of the privileged position of a person in a modern society over nature, while trying to challenge a well-established system through the design created by the local creative community.

“If we are talking about a person from a megalopolis it is really possible to have an affair with Earth? City life turns you into a car. Thіs car cannot just brake hard or pull off the road. We look upon the relationship between human and nature as something obvious and basic. It can be kind of love and desire, which meets our basic needs. Here in Ukraine we have one more unusual aspect in this topic. I mean the aftermath of Chernobyl disaster. Among other issues we got this huge experiment known as exclusion zone. What will happen if people are just extracted from particular area? As we found out nature can cope if we do not interfere. It renovates, enlarges and multiplies.”

“Our project is devoted to romantic relationship with nature. The famous Ukrainian writer Lesya Ukrainka spoke about it in her play “The forest song”. It is about an affair between a human and Earth which is coded in the Ukrainian national consciousness. Nature can help people or do just the opposite. If someone does not respect nature there will be consequences. How does it relate to design? Directly – if we understand design as a life approach. The point is that in Ukraine design is often understood as a ready object, the thing. Here we see a cultural distinction. In Ukraine, people often are result oriented while in the West they appreciate the process. If the process is working well, sooner or later you will get a result. Our project researches the interaction between a human and Earth as a process. I highly recommend designers who are going to send their works to the competition re-read or re-hear “The forest song” in audio format. It is a strong and relevant book which gave the start to our project’s main idea.”

“We often contradistinguish human and nature. As though they are two totally separate categories. People are used to separate themselves from nature, consider themselves as a dominant species as if they can determine life of other species because they are special. This year Ukrainian designers who are going to take part in our project got a really fascinating topic to speculate!”
